“The beginning is the most important part of the work.” ― Plato

The beginning of the school year is just around the corner, and for many of us, this new beginning brings excitement coupled with anxiety. As a retired teacher, I can assure you that your child’s teachers have many of the same feelings!

The challenges we all face this year will be significantly different from those we faced in the past. The best way to meet these challenges is for parents and teachers to work together to support each other as we navigate the staffing shortages that are affecting all schools, both public and private.

The Keep In Mind for me is to give each other grace.

  • Grace when the bus comes late….or not at all.
  • Grace when teachers fail to respond as quickly as you might like.
  • Grace when your child is overwhelmed and experiencing a meltdown because of it.
  • Grace for yourself when you can’t fix it all.
  • Grace with the well-meaning and caring IEP teams who are trying to implement IEPs with fidelity while struggling with the same challenges as you.

Giving grace allows everyone to remain in a regulated state. No one benefits more from having regulated parents and teachers than our children.

And so, as we move into the new school year, I will try to keep in mind the practice of giving grace.

Because the ultimate recipients of the practice of giving grace are our children.
